Edmond “Mon” de Goeyse was born on 1 October 1907 in Antwerp. He studied Latin and Greek at the athenaeumin Brussels and started his studies at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1925. He obtained his degree in Germanic Philology in 1929 and in 1933 he was promoted to Doctor of Philosophy and Arts (German Philology).
He is seen as the spiritual heir of Jef Vanden Eynde.
In 1923 he and som friends founded the Flemish Student Association of Great-Brussels which became the student association “Bezem Lovania Brussel” when whe went to Leuven in 1925.
He stood at the cradle of the Catholic Student Corps Brussels (1925), revived K.A.V. Lovania (1927), founded the Seniorenkonvent (1929) and wrote the Clubcodex (1935). He was also editor of “Ons Leven” (1929), founded the Flemish Former Students Club in Brussels (1934), was praeses of the Former Students Union Leuven (1935), etc.
Mon had an impressive archive about Flemish student life. This archive was later used as the basis of the Student Museum, which was located in the Central Library of the KULeuven. In 2014, this museum closed its doors and the entire collection disappeared in the basements of the University library.
de Goeyse wrote several articles about student life in various magazines, of which we find eleven in this book. The title already paints a very clear picture of the content; it refers to the translation of the famous German student song “O alte Burschenherrlichkeit”.
Mon de Goeyse is a pillar in the Flemish studentical tradition and this work forms an interesting source of information on various subjects.
The book is divided in eleven chapters, each about their own subject; ranging from studentical language, important figures and songbooks, to an extensive bibliographic list of books about student life. This book is a first go-to for anyone interested in Flemish student life.

Edmond “Mon” de Goeyse est né le 1er octobre 1907 à Anvers. Il a étudié le latin et le grec à l’Athénée de Bruxelles et a commencé ses études à l’Université catholique de Louvain en 1925. Il est considéré comme l’héritier spirituel de Jef Vanden Eynde.
En 1923, avec quelques amis, il fonde l’Association des étudiants flamands de la Grande-Bruxelles, qui devient l’association étudiante “Bezem Lovania Brussels” lorsqu’il part pour Louvain en 1925.
Il se tient au berceau du Corps des étudiants catholiques de Bruxelles (1925), fait revivre K.A.V. Lovania (1927), fonde la Seniorenkonvent (1929) et écrit le Club Codex (1935). Il a également été rédacteur en chef de “Ons Leven” (1929), a fondé le Club flamand des anciens étudiants à Bruxelles (1934), a été président de l’Union des anciens étudiants de Louvain (1935), etc.
Mon avait des archives impressionnantes sur la vie étudiante flamande. Ces archives ont ensuite servi de base au Musée des étudiants, qui était situé dans la Bibliothèque centrale de la KULeuven. En 2014, ce musée a fermé ses portes et toute la collection a disparu dans les caves de la bibliothèque universitaire.
de Goeyse a écrit plusieurs articles sur la vie étudiante dans diverses revues, dont onze sont repris dans ce livre. Le titre donne déjà une idée très claire du contenu ; il fait référence à la traduction de la célèbre chanson étudiante allemande “O alte Burschenherrlichkeit”.
Mon de Goeyse est un pilier de la tradition étudiante flamande et cet ouvrage est une source d’information intéressante sur différents sujets.
Le livre est divisé en onze chapitres, chacun sur un sujet différent, allant de la langue des étudiants, des personnages importants et des livres de chansons, à une liste bibliographique complète sur la vie étudiante. Edmond “Mon” de Goeyse werd geboren op 1 oktober 1907 in Antwerpen. Hij studeerde Latijn en Grieks aan het atheneum Brussel en begon zijn studie aan de Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven in 1925. In 1929 behaalde hij zijn diploma Germaanse Filologie en in 1933 werd hij gepromoveerd tot Doctor in de Wijsbegeerte en Kunst (Germaanse Filologie).
Hij wordt beschouwd als de geestelijke erfgenaam van Jef Vanden Eynde.
In 1923 richtte hij samen met enkele vrienden het Vlaams Studentenverbond van Groot-Brussel op, die de studentenvereniging “Bezem Lovania Brussel” werd toen hij in 1925 naar Leuven vertrok.
Hij stond aan de wieg van het Katholiek Studentencorps Brussel (1925), blies K.A.V. Lovania (1927) nieuw leven in, stichtte het Seniorenkonvent (1929) en schreef de Clubcodex (1935). Hij was ook redacteur van “Ons Leven” (1929), richtte de Vlaamse Oud-studentenclub in Brussel op (1934), was praeses van de Oud-Studentenbond Leuven (1935), enz.
Mon had een indrukwekkend archief over het Vlaamse studentenleven. Dit archief werd later gebruikt als basis voor het Studentenmuseum, dat zich in de Centrale Bibliotheek van de KULeuven bevond. In 2014 sloot dit museum zijn deuren en verdween de volledige collectie in de kelders van de universiteitsbibliotheek.
de Goeyse schreef verschillende artikels over het studentenleven in verschillende tijdschriften, waarvan we er elf in dit boek terugvinden. De titel geeft al een zeer duidelijk beeld van de inhoud; het verwijst naar de vertaling van het beroemde Duitse studentenlied “O alte Burschenherrlichkeit”.
