The« Scottish Students’ Song Book Committee » was set up in December 1889 with the aim of producing a collection of songs for use by students. The lack of such a collection had long been felt in Scotland. In the mid-1880s a committee had been set up in St. Andrews to collect and publish the songs popular among the students there. This had met with difficulties however, and instead it was agreed to abandon the scheme and to prepare an Inter-University Song Book under the auspices of the then four « Scottish Students’ Representative Councils ». With the less than enthusiastic support of the four SSRCs, the Scottish Students’ Song Book Committee » set about its task under the editorial convenership of Dr. Millar Patrick.
The « Scottish Students’ Song Book » went on sale in March 1891 and was an immediate success, selling out in three weeks. Later editions appeared in 1892 and 1897. The great success of the book made it necessary to form a limited company in 1891 – the « Scottish Students’ Song Book Committee Ltd. » – which throughout the 20th century produced several editions of the Song Book and its companion « The British Students’ Song Book » (1912). Since 1891, some 400,000 copies have been sold.

Le « Scottish Students’ Song Book Committee » a été fondé en décembre 1889 dans le but de collecter des chansons pour les étudiants. L’absence d’un tel recueil s’est longtemps fait sentir en Écosse. Au milieu des années 1880, un comité avait été établi à St. Andrews pour collecter et publier les chansons populaires parmi les étudiants de cette ville. Cette initiative s’est toutefois heurtée à des difficultés et il a été convenu d’abandonner le projet et de préparer un recueil de chansons interuniversitaire sous les auspices des quatre « Scottish Students’ Representative Councils » de l’époque. Le grand succès du livre a rendu nécessaire la création d’une société à responsabilité limitée en 1891 – le « Scottish Students’ Song Book Committee Ltd. » – qui, tout au long du XXe siècle, a produit plusieurs éditions du Song Book et de son compagnon « The British Students’ Song Book » (1912). Depuis 1891, quelque 400 000 exemplaires ont été vendus.

Het « Scottish Students’ Song Book Committee » werd in december 1889 opgericht met als doel een verzameling liederen te produceren voor gebruik door studenten. Het ontbreken van zo’n verzameling was al geruime tijd voelbaar in Schotland. In het midden van de jaren 1880 werd een comité opgericht in St. Andrews om de liederen te verzamelen en te publiceren die daar onder de studenten populair waren. Dit stuitte echter op moeilijkheden, en in plaats daarvan werd afgesproken om af te zien van de plannen en een interuniversitair liedboek op te stellen onder toezicht van de toenmalige vier « Scottish Students’ Representative Councils ». Met de minder dan enthousiaste steun van de vier SSRC’s begon het « Scottish Students’ Song Book Committee » aan zijn taak onder de redactie van Dr. Millar Patrick.
Het « Scottish Students’ Song Book » ging in maart 1891 in de verkoop en was meteen een succes, want het was in drie weken tijd uitverkocht. Latere edities verschenen in 1892 en 1897. Het grote succes van het boek maakte het noodzakelijk om in 1891 een naamloze vennootschap op te richten – de « Scottish Students’ Song Book Committee Ltd. » – die in de loop van de 20e eeuw verschillende edities van het liedboek en zijn compagnon « The British Students’ Song Book » (1912) publiceerde. Sinds 1891 zijn er zo’n 400.000 exemplaren verkocht.
