According to the Flemish codex, the Salamander is a toast in honour of something or someone.

There are many theories about the origin of the salamander ritual, but according to some it is related to the fire resistance of the salamander (the animal): so too will the friendship endure the fire test. According to others, it is the imitation of a libation performed by our pagan ancestors.

Both theories are ultimately perfectly reconcilable. We find the first traces of a simple salamander ritual in sources from the beginning of the nineteenth century; when the phenomenon of “nature spirits” revived during Romanticism. Students then rubbed glasses of burning schnapps against each other.

Later the “Beer Salamander” also appeared, simply because beer was a more obvious and available drink than Schnaps. We find the first signs of a Beer salamander at the Heidelberg Student Corps Saxo-Borussia.

Besides these salamanders, the “Toten-” or “Trauersalamander”, which is performed in honor of a deceased, is also known in Germany.

In Flanders, “Salamandering” usually refers to the honorary toast, but also to the drinking of glasses ad fundum.

The salamander is carried out according to a fixed structure in Flanders. When the praeses announces a Salamander, the glasses are emptied and refilled. The salamander command is given by the praeses and goes as follows:

Praeses:

“Silentium! Ready for the salamander to the salvation of N.N.!

(in honor of…)

Ad exercitium salamandris, omnes commilitones, surgite!”

Corona, stand up:

“Surgimus!”

Praeses:

“Raise your glass.

To the Dutch thought!

To the Flemish girl-loving heart!

To… (ad libitum) .

To the nose: sniff the delicious scents!

To the upper lip: a kiss goodbye!

To the lower lip!

Where’s the fire?”

Corona:

“Here!”

Praeses:

“Where are the firemen?”

Corona:

“Here!”

Praeses:

“Are the firehoses ready?”

Corona:

“Yes!”

Praeses:

“Then spray on the command of three.

One, two, three!”

The glasses are drunk ad fundum. The empty glasses are drummed on the table until the praeses raises  his glass; on his command of “One, Two, Three!” the glasses are slammed on the table.

Then the corona sings:

“Yes, we feel it.” (bis)

Right in our hearts, (bis)

Yes, we feel it. (bis)

To our youthful hearts!

And it’s been known for many years. (bis)

That all gives way to a student! (bis)”

Praeses:

“Salamander ex!”

At Gaudia, members are given a cord at the beginning of each year. After each salamander, they can add a knot their cord.

Gaudia was founded on 13 May 2003 under the name of “Ganges”, by Luc Steffens and Bram Brams.

On 13 September 2013 the name was changed to “Gaudia”.

Their colors are Black-red-black. Their shield shows a yellow field on the left with a black lion with red claws and the year 2003. The right field shows their colors diagonally from top right to bottom left and their monogram in silver.

Their motto is “In Amicitia Veritas”, which means “in friendship lies the truth”.

They are a Flemish, non-political, non-religious, traditional studentical association in Leuven.

Cordes de salamandre, Studentikoze Club Gaudia, Belgique, Louvain, 2015-présent

Coll. : Cap’n

Salamanderkoorden, Studentikoze Club Gaudia, België, Leuven, 2015-heden

Coll.: Cap’n

Corona:

“Hier!”

Praeses:

“Waar zijn de pompiers?”

Corona:

“Hier!”

Praeses:

“Zijn de spuiten klaar?”

Corona:

“Ja!”

Praeses:
