In 1975, Leuven University celebrated its 550th anniversary with a three-day international congress in May. The period from January to March 1976 saw a traditional academic session with a ceremonial procession through Leuven and the awarding of honorary doctorates, as well as a richly documented exhibition and TV programmes devoted to the history of Leuven’s Alma Mater. In addition, ten postcards featuring the main academic buildings were issued, a special stamp appeared, and concerts, sports events and an international teological congress were organised.
The most lasting memory is undoubtedly the publication of this commemorative book, which traces the history of the KULeuven from its foundation in 1425-1426 until 1975. This work is the shared legacy of the KUL and UCL. Six professors and their collaborators contributed to it. On 29 January 1976, it was formally presented to the public and the press by both rectors. It appeared simultaneously in both national languages.

En 1975, l’Université de Louvain a célébré son 550ème anniversaire par un congrès international de trois jours en mai. La période de janvier à mars 1976 a vu une session académique traditionnelle avec une procession cérémoniale dans Louvain et la remise de doctorats honorifiques, ainsi qu’une exposition richement documentée et des programmes télévisés consacrés à l’histoire de l’Alma Mater de Louvain. En outre, dix cartes postales représentant les principaux bâtiments académiques ont été émises, un timbre spécial est apparu, et des concerts, des événements sportifs et un congrès international théologique ont été organisés.
Le souvenir le plus durable est sans aucun doute la publication de ce livre commémoratif, qui retrace l’histoire de la KULeuven depuis sa fondation en 1425-1426 jusqu’en 1975. Cet ouvrage est l’héritage commun de la KUL et de l’UCL. Six professeurs et leurs collaborateurs y ont contribué. Le 29 janvier 1976, il a été officiellement présenté au public et à la presse par les deux recteurs. Il est paru simultanément dans les deux langues nationales.

In 1975 vier de Leuvense universiteit haar 550-jarig bestaan met een driedaags internationaal congres in mei. In de periode van januari tot maart 1976 vond een traditionele academische zitting met plechtige optocht door Leuven en de verlening van eredoctoraten, maar ook een rijk gedocumenteerde tentoonstelling en tv-programma’s gewijd aan de geschiedenis van de Leuvense Alma Mater. Daarnaast werden er tien ansichtkaarten uitgegeven met de voornaamste academische gebouwen, verscheen een speciale postzegel, en werden er concerten, sportmanifestaties en een internationaal teologisch congres georganiseerd.
De meest blijvende herinnering is ongetwijfeld de uitgave van dit gedenkboek, dat de geschiedenis van de KULeuven doorloopt vanaf haar stichting in 1425-1426 tot 1975. Dit werk is het gemeenschappelijk oeuvre van de KUL en de UCL. Zes professoren en hun medewerkers verleenden hieraanhun medewerking. Op 29 januari 1976 werd het door de beide rectoren plechtig aan het publiek en de pers voorgesteld. Het verscheen gelijktijdig in de beide landstalen.
