History
Moeder Payottenland was founded on Wednesday 29 November 1911 by Dr Jan-Frans Willems. The club grouped students from the Pajottenland region.
In the early years, monthly meetings were held in Leuven, or in the Pajottenland. The club was organised according to the principles of medieval guild life. During the summer months, three wise men were appointed from among the senior members, each of whom in turn became dean for a trimester. A knave leader was also appointed to guide the freshmen. At the time, the freshmen were called knaves and the seniors were called bosses.
During World War I, it shut down its activities.
By the early 1920s, the club had about 20 members. No records were kept then but the activities were no less jubilant for that. During this period, Edgard van Dessel wrote the club song which is still sung today.
In the mid-1930s, club or beer names were introduced and, with a few years delay, the regulations of the Seniorenkonvent and the Clubcodex were introduced. The tradition of three deans per club year disappeared and was exchanged for the more usual system of an annual praeses election.
Those pre-war years saw a lot of rolling in Leuven and the wider area.
During the Second World War, Moeder Payottenland could still count on some 20 loyal commilitones and things invariably got lively during the club meetings.
After the war, Paul Herbosch became the first and only Praeses Magnificus of Moeder Payottenland. During his last year, he also became Praeses of the Seniorenkonvent. He was extremely active in many fields but is mostly remembered for his slogan "Dulce cum sodalibus".
In the 1950s golden times dawned, as years with membership numbers of up to forty and even fifty commilitones were the rule rather than the exception. Under the impetus of René Belleweg, the establishment of Oud-Payottenland in 1950 made work of the former members' operation as well. The club's treasury was well filled so that the whole corona could take regular trips. No place at home or abroad was safe for the Payotten's excursions.
As for so many clubs, the 1960s were a lot more meagre, but the 1970s saw the return of fat years in the Bandung. Payottenland fraternised with Moeder Kortrijkse and together they experienced many a memorable evening.
The 1980s guaranteed joyful days in the Clijne Taefel and a corona with some thirty commilitones. From that period also dates the tradition of the Veterans' Nights on 10 November. After all, on the eve of a holiday, senior members had no excuse not to come down to Leuven so that old and young could fraternise.
In the early 1990s, Moeder Payottenland reached the final of the SK football competition, successful gala balls were organised at the Concert Noble in Brussels and, as icing on the cake, Jo Daris was elected as Praeses of the Seniorenkonvent.
Shortly afterwards, they moved to Den Boule where their club night still takes place on Tuesday nights. In 2001, the Veterans Night was scrapped and replaced by Walking with Dinosaurs. In the same year, Julien Keymolen released the book "Het verhaal van moeder Payottenland: een heerlijk studentenepos".
Colours
The colours were initially red-white-green with green as the main colour, but since the early 1930s (under the impetus of the Seniorenkonvent) this became red-green-red with green still as the main colour.
The left half of the shield shows hop vines with hop cones, while the right half is filled in with the colours and the Zirkel.
