StEIL
StEIL is the Faculty circle of the departments of nursing, midwifery and oral health at UC Leuven-Limburg (UCLL).
History
The St. Elisabeth Institute for Nursing is founded in 1928. The turbulent sixties and the arrival of more and more boys bring a change of air to the St. Elizabeth Institute. Until then it was mainly religious women who enrolled. More than one of these religious boys cannot resist the temptation and hangs away his habit during the training. For the first time a "real" student life comes into being at the St. Elisabeth Institute under the impulse of the boys.
In 1968 the students get their first praesidium and their own magazine: STERIEL. The magazine, published by the praesidium with limited means, soon turns out to be a forum for the dissatisfaction of the students. Announcements for parties, dances and other activities also get their place in STERIEL.
When priest Louis Hermans was asked to conduct the choir in 1971, he could not suspect that in the years to come he would be a key figure in student life at the St. Elisabeth Institute. Soon, as a student pastor, he is given the role of ombudsman. Until 1983 he negotiates and mediates between the praesidia and the school management. During this period, among other things, the students also get a bar. In short, student life at St. Elizabeth's gets up to speed.
The next generations and their praesidia are not sitting idle either. Building on the achievements of the 70s - despite some difficult periods - the students succeeded in keeping their own student life at the school flourishing. NURSIKA, the nursing bar, has been running at full speed for several years and many nursing students have had a pleasant time there. The well-known 'nurse parties' in the halls of 'ONS HUIS' also attract a lot of people, even from outside the school (medical and engineering students came there to find a girlfriend).
In the 90's the VOS is founded: Vereniging Oud-Studenten (Association of Former Students), for - as the name already says - the former students of the school of nursing. The VOS has some very prosperous years with activities such as the VOS-shows, the VOS-parties and the VOS-singing party, but becomes inactive from '99. In 2002, a few courageous people try to revive the VOS, unfortunately without much results.
The StEIL-bar at the school is also a regular spot for StEIL students, where sometimes they party hard and organize cantus. In 1999, this bar was closed because of fire safety concerns, but due to persistent impulses and protests from the praesidium of StEIL, the StEIL-bar was reopened in 2002, under the condition of clear agreements with the school concerning opening and closing times.
In 1995 the "St. Elisabeth Institute for Nursing" merged into the Katholieke Hogeschool Leuven (KH Leuven) and was incorporated into that new structure as the "Department of Nursing and Midwifery". Five years later, the StEIL student association enters into a cooperation agreement with the four other student associations of the KH Leuven and these five establish a supportive cooperation forum, the Overkoepelende Kringraad Leuven (OKeR), which becomes a serious interlocutor with the management of KH Leuven.
In 1998, café de Cuythoek, for years a café frequently visited by students and former students of nursing, becomes the Fakbar of StEIL. For several years, Sunday evenings became the regular Fakbar evening and there were many entertaining parties in the famous Cuythoek hall. In 2005 the praesidium decides to move the Fakbar to the Alegria, but the Cuythoek remains for many, often out of nostalgia, the pub of nursing. Until 2003, every year on the Thursday in the week of November 17 - the name day of the Holy Elisabeth - the StEIL festivities were held, consisting of a (Eucharistic) celebration enlivened by the choir and a fun afternoon in the StEIL bar at school, organized by the praesidium. Invariably, the gala ball was also scheduled for the Friday of the same week.
The Department of Nursing and Midwifery and the Department of Rega of the KH Leuven have been merged into the Department of Health Care and Technology since 2008. From 11 February 2008 the new department has been housed on the brand new site at the UZ Leuven Hospital Campus Gasthuisberg.
Since that day, student associations StEIL and Diana live side by side in the G&T department. These associations organize some activities together such as the first year weekend, Double trouble TD and gala.
In 2011, the Fakbar for the StEIL students moved to the vibrant café 't Archief. This café is again visited by many students and is well filled every Monday. The praesidium provides different promos every week which they offer to their students at a very nice price.
In 2015, the KH Leuven merged with the KH Limburg to form the UC Leuven-Limburg (UCLL).
Colours
The colors of StEIL are Green-Yellow-Red, these were chosen based on the training. For the 2016-2017 school year, the training consisted of three years. In those three years, one went on an internship at least twice each year. In the first year, where one is at the beginning of the training and is still a "rookie", one is given a green internship folder. In the second year, when you are a little more accomplished and no longer a rookie, you are given a yellow internship folder. In the third year, when you are almost ready to enter the profession and learn the final details of the trade, you are given a red training folder. Hence the colors green, yellow and red.
Shield
The heraldic shield is divided into three parts. On the left, one sees an upright, clawing Brabant lion. On the right side one finds the three colors again, slightly sloping from bottom left to top right, with the Zirkel in black. At the bottom of the shield is the red cross, representing their heart for nursing and care.
Couleur
Board members of StEIL wear a green-yellow-red board sashes, with the shield embroidered on it. Above this is their name, and at the bottom is the academic year and their position.
Members wear a Member's band in green-yellow-red.
